Make Equal Values with Cuisenaire Rods

| Download Math Vitamin :   PDF   Notebook Good Morning! Tomorrow we head to the Seattle Art Museum for a tour of Alexander Calder's artwork.

Big and tall or short and small, some of Calder's art moves and some hangs from a wall. If you want the mobile to hang straight, you must make sure to BALANCE the weight.

Using Cuisenaire Rods, find more combinations that you could use to make a mobile with two BALANCED or EQUAL sides. Be sure to test your theories on the balances.

Make Equal Values with Cuisenaire Rods 2

| Download Math Vitamin :   PDF   Notebook "Gather 'round, Lost Boys," Wendy called, "I have a really fun project for you!" Wendy was influenced by an artist she learned about during a visit to a museum. His name was Alexander Calder, and he created amazing MOBILES of shapes that move! Wendy challenged the boys to practice designing mobiles that can BALANCE. Now you can try!

First, create one side of your mobile using Cuisenaire rods. Then create a second side using a different combination of rods that will BALANCE or EQUAL the total of the first side.

Inspired by Peter Pan by J.M. Barrie
